Lister Music in Lisbon

50 students and 6 staff jetted off to Lisbon for four days of music making and sunshine (mostly!) this September on Lister’s first ever international music tour. After a day exploring the city, snapping the famous tiles and soaking up the views, the group took a boat trip over to the beautiful town of Belem where they sampled the famous Pasteis de Nata (custard tarts). The following two days were spent at St Julian’s School, a fantastic music school set in an old palace just a few metres from the beach. Lister’s orchestra and choir joined with the 100 or so students from St Julians, as well as another 100 musicians from the music group Vialonga and spent the days rehearsing together and mastering some wonderful repertoire, including Karl Jenkin’s Adiemus and Sibelius’s Finlandia. Even Lister’s opera, Full Circle, got its first international performance, as the choir performed Stick Like Bricks. It is safe to say the concert on the Sunday afternoon was a huge success, with standing ovations from the large audience and all the teachers feeling very proud indeed of the Lister students. The weekend finished with a celebratory picnic on the beach as the sun went down, playing frisbee with new friends from St Julians who we look forward to welcoming here in November as they come over to play in the Full Circle orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. A really wonderful time was had by all  – well done to all the students for doing Lister proud in Portugal!
